Varios senderos de distintas dificultades recorren las laderas boscosas del volcán. El ascenso completo al cráter (4,461 msnm) es una experiencia de alta montaña muy popular entre montañistas. Se recomienda partir muy temprano y llevar equipo adecuado. Hay acceso por las poblaciones de Chiautempan y Apizaco. Consulta sitio oficial de CONANP para permisos y condiciones actuales.
