5 Magic Towns in Nuevo León You Have to Visit in 2026

Nuevo LeónMay 2, 2026

Nuevo León has 5 official Magic Towns and each one tells you a different story of the state. If you live in Monterrey, they're weekend getaways that completely change the pace.

The distance from MTY varies between 30 minutes (Santiago) and 4 hours (General Zaragoza), so there are options for every travel appetite.

1. Santiago — the closest Magic Town

30 minutes south of Monterrey on the National Highway. It's the starting point if you've never done a Magic Town in NL. It has:

  • Cola de Caballo — the most photographed waterfall in the state
  • Presa Rodrigo Gómez (La Boca) — boat rides, restaurants on the shore
  • Historic center — gazebo, parish church, cabrito at El Mirador del Cerrito

Plan for a day: leave at 9am, cabrito at 1pm, reservoir in the afternoon, return at dusk.

2. Linares — the heart of sotol

2.5 hours south. Linares is the capital of Mexican sotol and has a very well-preserved colonial identity.

  • Cathedral of San Felipe — baroque facade from the late XVIII
  • Casa de la Cultura — rotating exhibitions
  • Sotolerías — guided tours
  • Restaurants with cabrito al pastor — La Casona and El Sotolar are the classics

If you plan to go, do it when there's a Festival del Tlachichile (fall) or Feria del Sotol (spring). We recommend staying overnight.

3. Bustamante — caves and old neighborhood

2 hours northwest. Bustamante combines two very different attractions:

  • Grutas de Bustamante — cave system with guided tour, suitable from age 7
  • Historic center — cobblestone streets, artisan market, milk-fed cabrito
  • Cerro de Picachos — for serious hiking (all day)

Sotol, tanned hides and local masks are the authentic souvenirs. There's a food fair in August that's worth scheduling.

4. General Terán — the citrus surprise

1.5 hours south. Less touristy than Santiago but with its own charm. It's orchard country — Nuevo León produces Persian limes for export and here you see the whole operation.

  • Citrus orchards (several offer tours)
  • Historic center — simple but authentic
  • Río Pilón — recreational fishing area

It's ideal if you're looking for a Magic Town without crowds. Half-day plan from MTY.

5. General Zaragoza — real mountain

The farthest and the most different. 4 hours from MTY, already deep in the Sierra Madre Oriental. Here the climate changes completely — pine-oak forests, mist, real coolness even in summer.

  • Forest cabins — several private owners offer nightly rentals
  • Hiking — routes at 2,500+ meters
  • Local trout — restaurants with their own fish farms
  • Hot springs of the valley — several spots 30 min from downtown

It's the 2-night weekend plan. It's the most "different" of the 5.

The route of all 5 in a single trip

If you have 4 days, the possible route is:

  • Day 1: Santiago (half day) → night in Linares
  • Day 2: Linares morning, Gral Zaragoza in the afternoon
  • Day 3: Gral Zaragoza full day (mountain)
  • Day 4: Bustamante on the way back → MTY

General Terán you can include as a stop on day 1 or 2.
