The 10 Best Hiking Routes in Mexico for 2026
Mexico is one of the most diverse countries in the world when it comes to hikeable terrain: desert, high glaciated mountains, tropical jungle, canyons, cliff-lined coastlines. This list covers the 10 routes that any Mexican hiker should have on their bucket list for 2026.
1. Cerro del Tepozteco (Tepoztlán, Morelos)
- Distance: 4 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~400 m · Difficulty: easy-moderate · Best season: November-March
The classic route for beginners. Starts from downtown Tepoztlán and ends at a pyramid on the summit. It gets packed on weekends — go on a weekday if you can.
2. Pico de Orizaba — Piedra Grande Shelter (without summit)
- Distance: 8 km one way · Elevation gain: ~600 m to shelter · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: October-March
While summiting Orizaba (5,636 m) is serious mountaineering, reaching the Piedra Grande shelter (4,260 m) is challenging but doable hiking. Impressive glacier views.
3. Cofre de Perote (Veracruz)
- Distance: 12 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~1,000 m · Difficulty: moderate-hard · Best season: November-February
Summit at 4,282 m. The trail starts at 3,200 m, so the actual elevation gain is manageable. Prior acclimatization is important.

The route to the "Los Cien" shelter on Iztaccíhuatl. The summit is for mountaineering, but reaching the shelter gives you real high-altitude experience.
5. Cañón del Sumidero (Chiapas) — Ascending Viewpoint Trail
- Distance: 6 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~400 m · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: November-May
The high perspective of the canyon is stunning. There are 5 viewpoints connected by trail. The last one is the "Christmas Tree" — worth every kilometer.
6. Cerro de la Silla (Monterrey, NL) — Las Brujas Route
- Distance: 8 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~700 m · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: October-April
Monterrey's iconic peak. The Las Brujas route is the most popular and best-maintained. Start early: in summer the sun will burn you out before 10am.
7. Sierra de Órganos (Zacatecas)
- Distance: variable, 4-15 km · Elevation gain: 200-600 m · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: March-May, October-November
Unique rock formations. Sierra de Órganos National Park is underrated. Few crowds, surreal landscape.
8. Cañón de Río Blanco (Querétaro)

Combines hiking with canyoneering elements. You'll need a local guide. Crystal-clear pools as your reward.
9. Real de Catorce — Wadley + Cerro del Quemado (SLP)

Ghost town + sacred wirikuta mountain + semi-desert landscape. One of the hikes with the most symbolic weight in the country.
10. Volcán Tacaná (Chiapas)

Summit at 4,060 m, on the Guatemala border. One of the most demanding accessible summits without technical climbing. Sleep at a community mam shelter.
