The 10 Best Hiking Routes in Mexico for 2026

MéxicoMay 1, 2026

Mexico is one of the most diverse countries in the world when it comes to hikeable terrain: desert, high glaciated mountains, tropical jungle, canyons, cliff-lined coastlines. This list covers the 10 routes that any Mexican hiker should have on their bucket list for 2026.

1. Cerro del Tepozteco (Tepoztlán, Morelos)

  • Distance: 4 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~400 m · Difficulty: easy-moderate · Best season: November-March

The classic route for beginners. Starts from downtown Tepoztlán and ends at a pyramid on the summit. It gets packed on weekends — go on a weekday if you can.

2. Pico de Orizaba — Piedra Grande Shelter (without summit)

  • Distance: 8 km one way · Elevation gain: ~600 m to shelter · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: October-March

While summiting Orizaba (5,636 m) is serious mountaineering, reaching the Piedra Grande shelter (4,260 m) is challenging but doable hiking. Impressive glacier views.

3. Cofre de Perote (Veracruz)

  • Distance: 12 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~1,000 m · Difficulty: moderate-hard · Best season: November-February

Summit at 4,282 m. The trail starts at 3,200 m, so the actual elevation gain is manageable. Prior acclimatization is important.

4. Iztaccíhuatl — La Joya to Shelter (without summit)

  • Distance: 15 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~1,000 m · Difficulty: hard · Best season: November-March

The route to the "Los Cien" shelter on Iztaccíhuatl. The summit is for mountaineering, but reaching the shelter gives you real high-altitude experience.

5. Cañón del Sumidero (Chiapas) — Ascending Viewpoint Trail

  • Distance: 6 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~400 m · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: November-May

The high perspective of the canyon is stunning. There are 5 viewpoints connected by trail. The last one is the "Christmas Tree" — worth every kilometer.

6. Cerro de la Silla (Monterrey, NL) — Las Brujas Route

  • Distance: 8 km round trip · Elevation gain: ~700 m · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: October-April

Monterrey's iconic peak. The Las Brujas route is the most popular and best-maintained. Start early: in summer the sun will burn you out before 10am.

7. Sierra de Órganos (Zacatecas)

  • Distance: variable, 4-15 km · Elevation gain: 200-600 m · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: March-May, October-November

Unique rock formations. Sierra de Órganos National Park is underrated. Few crowds, surreal landscape.

8. Cañón de Río Blanco (Querétaro)

  • Distance: 10 km · Elevation gain: variable (canyoneering) · Difficulty: moderate-hard · Best season: November-March

Combines hiking with canyoneering elements. You'll need a local guide. Crystal-clear pools as your reward.

9. Real de Catorce — Wadley + Cerro del Quemado (SLP)

  • Distance: 15 km loop · Elevation gain: ~600 m · Difficulty: moderate · Best season: October-March

Ghost town + sacred wirikuta mountain + semi-desert landscape. One of the hikes with the most symbolic weight in the country.

10. Volcán Tacaná (Chiapas)

  • Distance: 25 km round trip (2 days) · Elevation gain: ~2,000 m · Difficulty: hard · Best season: November-February

Summit at 4,060 m, on the Guatemala border. One of the most demanding accessible summits without technical climbing. Sleep at a community mam shelter.

General Tips

  • Acclimatization: if you're going above 3,500 m, spend 1-2 days at 2,500-3,000 m first
  • Minimum gear: trekking poles, thermal layer, 3+ L of water, salty snacks
  • Clothing: layers, no cotton, waterproof hiking boots
  • Local guide: for Tacaná, Sumidero, always recommended
