What to do with kids in Mexico City this weekend

Ciudad de MéxicoApril 29, 2026

Mexico City is one of the most kid-friendly cities in the country, but knowing WHERE to go makes the difference between a magical weekend and a frustrating one.

For the little ones (3-6 years)

Papalote Museo del Niño — Polanco The classic. Over 350 interactive exhibits. Plan for 4-5 hours. Tickets from $200/child, $200/adult. Go early (10am when it opens) to avoid crowds. They have a restaurant inside.

KidZania — Santa Fe Miniature city where kids "work." Perfect for ages 4-12. Takes the whole day. Book online — weekends fill up.

Granja Las Américas — Coyoacán/Xochimilco Animals, shows, workshops. Better for ages 3-7. $150-250 per person.

Bosque de Chapultepec — First Section FREE. Lake for rowboats, playgrounds, kite flying. The ultimate family Sunday. Combine with a visit to the Zoo (also free) or the Natural History Museum.

For school-age kids (7-12 years)

Universum — Ciudad Universitaria UNAM's science museum. 3 floors of interactive exhibits — from the cosmos to the brain. Plan for at least 4 hours. $150-180.

MIDE — Museo Interactivo de Economía Downtown. For kids 8+. Learn about money, markets, decisions in a fun format. They usually have special workshops on Saturdays.

Museo del Juguete Antiguo Mexicano Doctores, near Downtown. Obsessive collection of Mexican toys. Kids are amazed by what grandma used to play with. $80 per person.

Museo Nacional de Antropología For kids 10+ interested in dinosaurs, civilizations, mummies. It's huge — go in with a clear plan. Must-see: Mexica Room (Piedra del Sol).

Parks and outdoor

Parque La Mexicana — Santa Fe Small but modern design. Great playgrounds, lake to feed ducks, space to run around.

Parque Hundido — Benito Juárez Sculptures, squirrels, picnic areas. Sundays have free zumba and family yoga classes.

Parque Bicentenario — Azcapotzalco Underrated. Lakes, huge areas, playgrounds. Less crowded than Chapultepec.

Workshops and regular activities

Museums offer rotating workshops on weekends — painting, science, robotics, cooking. NoTeLimites lists updated weekend workshops in the kids category.

Key spots: - Casa del Lago Juan José Arreola — writing and art workshops - Centro Cultural España — excellent family programming, free - Faro Aragón / Indios Verdes — workshops in outlying areas, free

Special events by season

Children's Day (April 30) ALL museums usually have special activities. Plan: 1 museum in the morning + 1 park in the afternoon. Box offices get slammed, arrive early.

International Children's Film Festival Usually October-November. 3 days of short and feature films curated for kids. At Cineteca Nacional.

Halloween / Day of the Dead The plazas in Coyoacán, Mixquic and the Monumental Ofrenda at the Zócalo are must-sees. Combine with costumes.

Posadas and Christmas December has intense programming. The Zócalo Ice Rink (free with reservation), holiday villages in plazas, children's concerts.

Logistics tips

  • Park at shopping malls nearby, not on the street
  • Head out after breakfast — hungry kids = bad time
  • Bring snacks and water — it can be pricey inside museums
  • Book online anything that might get crowded — Papalote, KidZania, children's cinema
  • Always have a Plan B — if it rains, have a museum backup
