Rememorando la épica historia de Cio-Cio San, en Nagasaky a principios del siglo XX. El oficial de la marina estadounidense Pinkerton consigue casarse con Madama Butterfly gracias a un casamentero. Ella, repudiada por su familia por contraer matrimonio con un extranjero, espera que su matrimonio dure toda la vida. Para su esposo sólo se trate de una pequeña aventura fuera del país, regresando a Estados Unidos rehace su vida casándose de nuevo, mientras ella, embarazada, espera su regreso.
