Uetliberg: the mountain Zurich keeps in its backyard
A summit with a train station, a ridge walk scaled to the solar system, and the Alps lined up across the lake. Zurich's house mountain is the best after-work climb in Europe — and the whole thing runs on public transport.
Most cities admire their mountains from a distance. Zurich commutes to one. The Uetliberg rises 870 metres directly behind the city — close enough that the S10 train leaves the main underground platforms and arrives just below the summit in roughly twenty minutes, high enough that from the observation tower the lake, the city and the full wall of the Alps arrange themselves like a diorama. On clear autumn days, when fog drowns the valley and the summit floats above it, half of Zurich seems to be up here taking the same photograph.
Up the honest way
The train is for the way down. The classic ascent starts at Triemli tram stop and climbs through beech forest on wide, well-marked trails — under an hour of steady uphill that trail runners treat as their morning gym and families stretch into a picnic outing. The reward structure is perfectly Swiss: a summit restaurant, a tower with a small fee and a big view, and the knowledge that the city you left is still visible below, carrying on without you.
The ridge with a solar system
The Uetliberg's masterstroke is what comes after the top. The Planetenweg runs south along the wooded ridgeline toward Felsenegg: a two-hour panoramic walk where the route doubles as a one-to-a-billion scale model of the solar system — the Sun at the summit, planets spaced along the trail, the lake glinting far below through the trees. At Felsenegg, the cable car drops you to Adliswil, where a train returns you to the city. Summit, ridge, cable car, home: a complete alpine day executed entirely on a transit pass.
When to go
After work in summer — the light lasts, the crowds don't. Sledding season transforms the descent trails after the first proper snow. And in November, watch the webcams: fog below plus sun above is the Uetliberg's signature trick, and it is worth rearranging a morning for.
A mountain with a timetable. Only Zurich. no te limites.
