The Amsterdamse Bos: the forest Amsterdam built by hand

Every map of Amsterdam undersells the green smudge at its southwest corner. The Amsterdamse Bos is not a park; it is a forest three times the size of New York's Central Park, planted from scratch on reclaimed polder during the Depression, when the city put twenty thousand people to work with shovels and a plan. Ninety years later the trees are tall, the wildlife moved in on its own, and the Bos absorbs millions of visits a year without ever feeling crowded — because almost all of them are locals.

The water at its heart

Down the forest's spine runs the Bosbaan: two kilometres of dead-straight rowing water, the oldest artificial course in the world and still in weekly use by the city's rowing clubs. Walking or running its perimeter — about five kilometres of flat, tree-lined path — is the classic Bos loop, with regattas most weekends in season and a café at the finish tower where the coffee comes with coxswains shouting in the background.

What locals actually do here

Run, mostly — the Bos is Amsterdam's favourite long-run terrain, with its own Saturday parkrun and enough trail variety to build any distance. Beyond that: the goat farm deep in the forest (a small local institution beloved by anyone under eight), rented canoes and pedal boats on the winding waterways, the open-air theatre that plays all summer under the trees, and in February, if the winter cooperates, the cherry blossom orchard — four hundred trees donated by the Japanese community — briefly becomes the most photographed corner of the Netherlands.

Getting there

The Bos starts where Amsterdam Zuid ends: fifteen minutes by bike from the museums, or bus from Zuid and Amstelveen. Enter at the main gate by the Bosbaan, pick any path heading south, and let the forest decide. It is very hard to do this place wrong.
